The tower is considered a landmark of the town of Bergen on Rügen. This observation tower is 27 metres high and was built between 1869 and 1876 as a monument to the poet, reformer and patriot Ernst Moritz Arndt (1769 to 1860), who was born on the island of Rügen. After extensive renovation, today you can climb up to the glass dome and enjoy the magnificent view over the entire island of Rügen.
In this location, the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt Tower offers three vantage points at different heights and gives its visitors a wonderful panoramic view of the island of Rügen with views of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, the island of Vilm, the island of Hiddensee and Cape Arkona on Rügen's northern tip. To do this, you should climb the highest level (easy to do), on the other levels you will only see trees.
In the beginning, the Rugard Tower had a tiled dome, then in GDR times a roof made of slate shingles. Nowadays, visitors find a striking glass dome above them, which is even illuminated from the inside at night. The great view and the walking environment make a visit well worthwhile.
