Bergen, Germany
Bergen is the capital of the island. The 13 600 citizens live on an area of 50 km², which is divided into 18 districts. Fitting for its central location, Bergen is found on a small hill, that stands out to the rest of the area, which is used for agriculture.
A town with thousand years of history. You will find hints of Bergens eventful history if you go on a discory tour through the town. Next to the market place you see the St. Mary church, which was sanctified 1193, and reminds of the first settlings in this area. Bergen was diplomatic mentioned 1314 and the oldest half-timber house that is still standing today was built 1538. But only half a century ago, the industrialisation of the town started. Since the fall of the Berlin wall, the redevelopment of the historic town centre began. For a walk there you'll only need a 10 minute walk from the Parkhotel. Next to the church is the monastery yard where you find the town museum.
